        🏛 Yaroslavsky Station
        Комсомольская пл., 5
Shekhtel's fairy-tale station of 1904 in the Neo-Russian style with a high roof and majolica, the starting point of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Start at Komsomolskaya metro: above the entrance of Yaroslavsky Station are Shekhtel’s coats of arms and majolica

        • The first building, from 1862, served the line to Sergiev Posad, and the station was called Troitsky.
        • From 1922 to 1955 the station was called Severny (Northern).
        • Shekhtel rebuilt the station in 1902–1904, keeping part of the old building and using reinforced concrete.
        • Above the entrance are the coats of arms of Moscow, Arkhangelsk and Yaroslavl, the main cities of the line.
        • The halls were decorated with Konstantin Korovin's panels about life in the North, such as "Walrus Hunt" and "Northern Lights".
        • The Trans-Siberian's "Kilometer Zero" is marked between tracks three and four.
        • On 20 June 1929 Moscow's first electric train left from here.

        🏛 Kazansky Station
        Комсомольская пл., 2
Shchusev's station with a tower modeled on Kazan's Syuyumbike, built from 1913 to 1940.
Cross the square: Shchusev’s tower echoes the Syuyumbike Tower in Kazan, and its clock has a bronze zodiac

        • Until 1912 the station was called Ryazansky; it was renamed when the line reached Kazan.
        • The first train, to Kolomna, left Ryazansky Station on 20 July 1862.
        • Shchusev won the competition for the "gateway to the East" against Fyodor Shekhtel, the author of the neighboring Yaroslavsky Station.
        • Roerich, Benois, Kustodiev, Lanceray and Serebriakova took part in the interior design.
        • The restaurant is styled as a Moscow Baroque refectory with Lanceray's murals; Ilf and Petrov described it in "The Twelve Chairs".
        • Shchusev drew the bronze zodiac signs for the tower clock himself; the clock was started only in 1923.
        • The reconstruction after Shchusev's drawings, with the new Tsar's Tower, was finished in 1997, for Moscow's 850th anniversary.

        Новорязанская ул., 27

        • The garage on Novoryazanskaya is Konstantin Melnikov's second garage, on which he began work in 1926.
        • The horseshoe shape was dictated by the triangular plot, not just by the architect's concept.
        • The 54 roof trusses rest only on the outer walls, so there is not a single support inside the hall.
        • Before the museum, a taxi depot, a car repair plant and a bus depot worked here, until 2015.
        • Exhibits include a metro car from Berlin and the MatrEshka driverless bus.
        • The museum traces its history to the Retro Car Museum on Rogozhsky Val, opened in 2003.

        🏛 Novo-Alekseevsky Monastery
        2-й Красносельский пер., 7
🚪 entrance from 2nd Krasnoselsky Lane
A monastery that "moved": in 1837 it was transferred here from Ostozhenka, when construction of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour began on its old site. In the courtyard are the Church of All Saints by Thon and the small 17th-century Tikhvin Church.
Via Krasnoprudnaya and Krasnoselskaya — about 25 minutes. In the yard next to the big All Saints church, find the small Tikhvin church — it is older than the monastery

        • The Alekseevsky Monastery was founded in 1358 by Metropolitan Alexei in Chertolye, by present-day Ostozhenka.
        • In 1837 the convent was moved to Krasnoye Selo: its site was needed for the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
        • The Church of All Saints was built by Konstantin Thon — the architect of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour itself.
        • The Tikhvin Church is older than the monastery on this spot — it is the former church of the village of Krasnoye.
        • Krasnoye Selo stood by the large Krasny Pond; it was filled in at the start of the 20th century, and the Kazansky Station tracks are there now.

        🏛 Rusakov Club
        ул. Стромынка, 6
Konstantin Melnikov's most recognisable workers' club: three concrete "teeth" of the auditorium loom over Stromynka. Now home to Roman Viktyuk's theatre.
The best angle is from the opposite side of Stromynka: the three “teeth” of the hall hang over the pavement. Sokolniki metro is nearby

        • The club was built in 1927–1929 for the municipal workers' union and named after its chairman Ivan Rusakov.
        • The three projections on the facade are the auditorium's balconies, cantilevered out over the street.
        • Melnikov devised a transformable hall: partitions could divide it into several separate halls.
        • The same architect built the garage on Novoryazanskaya a couple of years earlier — now the Moscow Transport Museum.
