        • The garden was laid out in 1819–1823 to a design by Osip Bove on the site of the Neglinnaya River, which was put into an underground pipe.
        • It was named Alexander Garden in 1856 after Alexander I, under whom Moscow was rebuilt after the fire of 1812.
        • Bove built the Ruins Grotto by the Middle Arsenal Tower in 1820; its masonry includes fragments of buildings destroyed in 1812.
        • The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was opened on 8 May 1967: a soldier's remains were moved here from the 41st kilometre of Leningradskoye Shosse.
        • Guard of Honour Post No. 1 was moved from the Mausoleum to the Eternal Flame in 1997; the guard changes every hour.
        • The 1914 obelisk for the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov was converted in 1918 into a monument to revolutionary thinkers, and in 2013 it got its original look back.
        • The garden is divided into three parts, Upper, Middle and Lower, and stretches along the Kremlin's western wall for about 865 metres.

        • The square is named after the Arbat Gate of the White City, which stood here until the end of the 18th century.
        • The Khudozhestvenny cinema opened in 1909, one of the oldest in Moscow; in 1912–1913 it was rebuilt by Fyodor Shekhtel.
        • Until 1951 the square held Nikolai Andreyev's monument to Gogol; since 1959 it has stood in the courtyard at 7a Nikitsky Boulevard, where the writer died.
        • The 1935 pavilion of Arbatskaya station on the Filyovskaya line is built in the shape of a five-pointed star.
        • Pedestrian Old Arbat begins at the square, and New Arbat, laid out in the 1960s, leads off from it.

        • From 1963 to 1990 the street was part of Kalinin Prospekt, and Muscovites called it "Kalininsky".
        • Building the avenue wiped out Sobachya Ploshchadka, Sobachy Lane and Krechetnikovsky Lane.
        • The ensemble was built in 1962–1968 to a design by a group of architects led by Mikhail Posokhin.
        • The north side has five 24-story residential towers of 176 apartments each, the south side four 26-story "books" on an 800-meter podium.
        • Residents' terraces were planned on the roof of the podium, but after Kennedy's assassination in 1963 the "books" were given to ministries.
        • In August 1991 three defenders of the White House died in the tunnel under Novy Arbat.

        • The building was built in 1972–1981 to a design by Dmitry Chechulin; its authors received the Lenin Prize for it.
        • At first Chechulin proposed building the House of Soviets on Taganskaya Square.
        • The nickname "White House" stuck in August 1991, when the building became the center of resistance to the GKChP.
        • On 19 August 1991 Boris Yeltsin spoke by the building from a Taman Division tank.
        • In October 1993 tanks standing on the bridge fired 12 shells at the upper floors.

        • In 1806, when Moscow's first public garden was laid out at the Presnya Ponds, the bridge was faced with white stone.
        • In December 1905 fierce fighting took place for the bridge: it connected Presnya with the city center.
        • Since 1918 the bridge has officially been called the "1905 Bridge"; it was restored in 1980 for the 75th anniversary of the uprising.
        • In the 1990s rallies and pickets were held on the bridge, including by miners and defrauded depositors.
