Bogatyrs and princesses: Vasnetsov’s fairy tales

      ⏱ 4 h🚶 2 km + 🚇🍽 1📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

A morning in the fairy-tale house where Vasnetsov painted his tales, then “Three Bogatyrs” and “Alyonushka” in the Tretyakov Gallery, behind the facade he also designed, and lunch with a kids’ room.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture🎨 Art☔️ If it rains
      👶 3–6, 7–12 years · ✗ hard with a stroller

In the house-museum a wooden staircase leads to the second floor — strollers are left downstairs. Sukharevskaya has no lift; at the Tretyakov the stroller goes to the cloakroom, and a sling is easier in the halls.

        🖼 Vasnetsov House Museum
        пер. Васнецова, 13
        🎟 ticket
A wooden terem-style house that Viktor Vasnetsov built for himself: carved stoves, painted furniture and a studio under the roof with huge paintings of fairy-tale scenes. A small, quiet museum that kids understand easily.
Come for the 10:00 opening (open Wednesday to Sunday). Downstairs are painted stoves and furniture from the owner’s drawings, and upstairs, in the studio under the roof, are “The Sleeping Princess”, “Tsarevna Nesmeyana” and “Koschei the Deathless”: ask your child to find Koschei first. An hour is enough

        • The house was built in 1894 to Vasnetsov's own drawings in the spirit of an old Russian terem.
        • The artist lived here for more than thirty years, until his death in 1926.
        • The museum opened in 1953 and is now a branch of the Tretyakov Gallery.
        • The second-floor studio holds the large canvases "Sleeping Princess", "Princess Nesmeyana" and "Koschei the Deathless".
        • The facade of the Tretyakov Gallery in Lavrushinsky Lane was also drawn by Vasnetsov.

        🖼 Tretyakov Gallery
        Лаврушинский пер., 10
        🎟 ticket
The main collection of Russian art in a fairy-tale building to Vasnetsov's design, from ancient icons to painting of the early 20th century.
First stand in front of the facade: the fairy-tale terem with Moscow’s coat of arms was also Vasnetsov’s idea — compare it with his house. Inside, go straight to the Vasnetsov hall: “Three Bogatyrs”, “Alyonushka”, “Ivan Tsarevich on the Grey Wolf”. For little ones an hour and a half in the halls is enough — don’t try to see everything

        • The founding date is considered to be 1856, when the merchant Pavel Tretyakov bought his first paintings by Russian artists.
        • In 1892 Tretyakov donated the collection and the house in Lavrushinsky Lane to Moscow.
        • The fairy-tale facade with Old Russian motifs was built in 1902–1904 to a drawing by Viktor Vasnetsov.
        • Repin's painting Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan has been damaged by vandals twice, in 1913 and in 2018.
        • Alexander Ivanov painted The Appearance of Christ to the People for about 20 years, and a separate hall was built for the canvas.
        • Until 2026 the Vladimir Icon was kept in the Church-Museum of St Nicholas in Tolmachi; it is now in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, and Tolmachi has a copy.

🌅 Luzhkov Bridge and the “Love Trees”
через Водоотводный канал, от Болотной наб. к Кадашёвской
A pedestrian bridge over the Vodootvodny Canal with metal trees for “wedding” padlocks.
To finish, 10 minutes to the Drainage Canal: on the bridge stand iron “love trees” covered in padlocks, which kids love to count. From here you see GES-2, and it’s 10 minutes to Tretyakovskaya or Polyanka metro

        • Officially the bridge is called Tretyakovsky, as it is part of the Tretyakov Gallery ensemble; it is also nicknamed the “Kissing Bridge”.
        • The unofficial name comes from Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, although the official version traces it to Tsaritsyn Meadow, the old name of Bolotnaya Square.
        • The bridge opened in mid-1994; Zurab Tsereteli drew the railing with medallions and the lamps from his own sketches.
        • Moscow's first “love tree” for padlocks appeared here in April 2007, and six months later there was no room left, so two more were added.
        • On one side the bridge leads to the Ilya Repin monument on Bolotnaya Square, on the other to Lavrushinsky Lane.
