Basmannaya with a toddler: a garden, Yelokhov and puppets

      ⏱ 3 h 30 min🚶 1.8 km🍽 1📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

A quiet walk from Bauman Garden along Staraya Basmannaya to the cathedral where Pushkin was baptised, then a show at the Moscow Puppet Theatre, one of the oldest in the city. Lunch at the inexpensive Mu-Mu around the corner.

      👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture🎨 Art
      👶 3–6, 7–12 years · ✓ stroller-friendly

The pavements are wide and the garden paths are level. At the theatre the stroller is left in the cloakroom; Baumanskaya has no lift, so it’s easier to take a trolleybus or a taxi.

        • In the late 18th century Prince Mikhail Golitsyn opened his estate garden to everyone: Muscovites were "allowed to walk in it freely".
        • The park officially opened in spring 1920 as the "1st of May Garden", and it has borne Bauman's name since 1922.
        • The garden still has the artificial Belvedere grotto of the 18th century; in Soviet times there was a café in it.
        • On the garden's stage, built in the 1920s–1930s, Leonid Utesov and Klavdiya Shulzhenko performed.
        • A bust of Bauman by Vladlen Odinokov was put up in 1972 and moved in 1992.
        • The 2012 reconstruction was done by the Wowhaus bureau.

        🏛 Epiphany Cathedral in Yelokhovo
A five-domed Empire-style cathedral with rich decoration, for a long time Moscow's cathedral church.
20 minutes on foot along Staraya Basmannaya and Spartakovskaya. Pushkin was baptised in this cathedral in 1799 — a good reason to recall “The Tale of Tsar Saltan” with your child and step inside for a few minutes

        • In 1799 Alexander Pushkin was baptised here, in the earlier church; a plaque of 1991 at the entrance recalls this.
        • The current cathedral was built from 1835 to 1845, designed by Yevgraf Tyurin; its domed rotunda echoes St Peter's in Rome.
        • The wooden Epiphany church in the village of Yelokhovo is first mentioned in 1694.
        • From 1938 to 1991 the church was the Patriarchal cathedral; enthronements of patriarchs took place here in 1943, 1945, 1971 and 1990.
        • Patriarchs Sergius and Alexy II are buried in the cathedral; Sergius's tombstone of 1949 was Alexei Shchusev's last work.

After the show it’s 3 minutes to Mu-Mu: porridge, soup, cutlets and compote at the serving counter, and the child picks what goes on the tray. From here it’s 5 minutes to Baumanskaya metro
🍴 An inexpensive Mu-Mu café between Yelokhovo Cathedral and Lefortovo, with homemade food at the serving counter. What to order: a business lunch, breakfast, soup, meat French-style.
