🏛 "Cobblestone — the Weapon of the Proletariat" sculpture
Парк Декабрьского восстания, ул. Трёхгорный Вал
Ivan Shadr's famous sculpture — a worker wrenching a cobblestone from the pavement — stands in the park by Ulitsa 1905 Goda metro, where fighting took place in December 1905.
From Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 3 minutes to December Uprising Park. The worker with a cobblestone is in the north part of the park, with two more monuments to 1905 beside it.

        • Ivan Shadr made the sculpture in plaster in 1925–1927; the plaster original is kept in the Tretyakov Gallery.
        • The bronze cast was made in 1947 and placed in the park in 1967, for the 50th anniversary of Soviet power.
        • It shows a young worker tearing a stone out of the pavement — a generalised image of an uprising participant.
        • The same December Uprising Park has two more monuments to the events of 1905 on Presnya.

🏛 Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
        Малая Грузинская ул., 27/13
A red neo-Gothic cathedral with spires — the largest Catholic church in Russia. It has a big organ inside, with concerts in the evenings.
10 minutes along Presnensky Val and Malaya Gruzinskaya. You can go in during the day between Masses; don't take photos during a service.

        • The cathedral, designed by Tomasz Bogdanowicz-Dworzecki, was built from 1901 and consecrated on 21 December 1911.
        • The money was raised by the Polish community and believers from all over Russia — about 300,000 gold roubles.
        • In 1938 the church was closed; after the war it was divided into floors and used as a dormitory, then a research institute and a vegetable-depot warehouse.
        • It is now the cathedral of the Archdiocese of the Mother of God, with Masses in several languages.

        Большая Грузинская ул., 13
The church of the former Georgian Sloboda (Gruziny) — the spiritual centre of Moscow's Georgians: services here are in Georgian and Church Slavonic.
Along Malaya Gruzinskaya and right onto Bolshaya Gruzinskaya — 5 minutes. The old low part of the church is 18th-century, and the large brick part was added in 1899.

        • The settlement grew up around the palace of the Georgian king Vakhtang, who came to Moscow in 1725.
        • The first, wooden church was consecrated in 1750 with funds from Tsarevich George, Vakhtang's son.
        • In 1899 a large brick church in the Russian-Byzantine style was added to the old one, designed by Vasily Sretensky.
        • The church was closed in 1930; the ancient part was returned to the Church in 1993, and a technical college vacated the new one only in 2015.

        • The first, wooden church was built around 1685 — the church's icon is dated 1686.
        • In 1696 the Presnya settlement already had 330 households.
        • Construction of the stone church began in 1714, but the work was interrupted by a decree banning stone building across the country for the sake of Petersburg.
        • In 1756 a side chapel of the church was consecrated by Metropolitan Roman (Eristavi), head of the Georgian Church — the Georgian Sloboda was nearby.
