        • The square was named Lermontovskaya in 1941: here, in the house opposite the Krasnye Vorota (Red Gate), the poet was born on the night of 3 October 1814.

        🏛 Krasnye Vorota Skyscraper
        Садовая-Спасская ул., 21/1
A Stalinist skyscraper on the Garden Ring with the entrance to Krasnye Vorota metro built into its base.
The skyscraper is behind the square. Look at it from the far corner of the square: the metro vestibule is built right into its base.

        • The skyscraper was built in 1947–1953 to a design by Alexei Dushkin and Boris Mezentsev.
        • The central tower holds offices, and the side wings 276 flats; the five-room ones had little rooms for housemaids.
        • The surface vestibule of Krasnye Vorota metro station is built into the building.
        • It was built on quicksand: the ground was frozen, and the tower was erected with a tilt, in the expectation that it would straighten after thawing.

        🏛 Yusupov Chambers (Palaty Yusupovykh)
Большой Харитоньевский пер., 21, стр. 4

Along Sadovaya-Spasskaya and into Bolshoy Kharitonyevsky — 6–7 minutes. The chambers are behind a fence: look from the lane, as they don't let you into the courtyard.

        • The chambers are dated to the 17th — early 18th century; legend says it was Ivan the Terrible's hunting palace, but there are no documents for this.
        • Peter I gave the chambers to Vice-Chancellor Pyotr Shafirov and visited here himself in 1723.
        • The estate later passed to the Princes Yusupov — hence the name.
        • The chambers are a federal cultural heritage site; no entry inside, you look from the lane.
