        🏛 Main entrance to Sokolniki
The arched entrance complex of the park at Sokolnicheskaya Square, from which a wide avenue leads deep into the forest.
Start at Sokolniki metro in time for sunset (in late October, around 17:20). The main avenue is lamplit in the evening.

        • The name comes from sokolniki, falconers who trained hunting birds: Ivan the Terrible and Alexei Mikhailovich hunted here.
        • In 1878 the city bought the Sokolnichya and Olenya groves and set up a public park.
        • In 2019 a memorial sign was placed at the main entrance to Mayor Sergei Tretyakov, thanks to whom Sokolniki became a city park.
        • In 1931 Sokolniki was declared a park of culture and leisure; until 1937 it bore the name of People's Commissar Andrei Bubnov.
        • The park covers 516 hectares and borders Losiny Ostrov to the north.

        🌳 Fountain Square in Sokolniki
A round square with a large fountain, from which the main clearings of the old park radiate like rays.
The fountain is off for winter, but the square is the heart of the park: the avenues fan out from here.

        • Eight avenues fan out from the Sokolniki Circle, including Pesochnaya, the Luchevye and the Maysky clearings.
        • The fan layout of the clearings was cut in the 1840s.
        • The Maysky clearing was cut as early as Peter I, who held festivities here.
        • In 1883 a wooden rotunda was put up on the circle, where music played on holidays and later concerts and even operas were given.
        • In 1959 the American National Exhibition opened nearby, where Khrushchev and Nixon held the famous "kitchen debate".

        🌳 Arch Alley in Sokolniki
        4-й Лучевой просек, парк «Сокольники»
An alley under metal arches wrapped in plants, the most photogenic spot between Fountain Square and the rose garden.
Walk under the arches and return to the exit along Pesochnaya Alley — that way the way back doesn't repeat your route.

        • The 4th Luchevoy Avenue was cut during the war of 1812 as the shortest road to Losiny Ostrov.
        • In the late 19th century each avenue was planted with its own tree species; the 4th with maples.
        • The avenue leads to Festival Square, where the 1959 American exhibition with Khrushchev and Nixon's "kitchen debate" opened.
        • The Great Rose Garden opened in 1957 for the 6th World Festival of Youth.
