        • On 1 August 1957 almost 5,000 festival guests planted trees here and left notes with their names on the branches.
        • The layout followed the festival's symbol, a daisy with five petals for the continents; in the centre they planted five 50-year-old lindens from VDNKh and an 80-year-old oak.
        • The Festival Ponds are former pits of the Nikolsky brick factory, opened in 1871.
        • The park's main avenue points at the spire of the Northern River Terminal across Leningradskoye Highway.
        • In 1977 a monument to Hungarian-Soviet friendship replaced the daisy flower bed.

        🌳 Northern River Terminal Park
A 1930s park around the Northern River Terminal, with a view of the Khimki Reservoir and a promenade along the water.
Go down the park’s terraces to the water — they were heaped up from the soil dug out when the reservoir was made. The fountains are off in autumn, but the alleys are lit.

        • The park was laid out in 1936–1938 on an artificial terrace after the opening of the Moscow Canal; the layout was designed by engineer T. P. Shafransky.
        • Originally the park had 14 sculptural groups and fountains; the fountain bowls and the sculptures Waterway and Sport have survived.
        • Since 1999 the park has been protected as a monument of landscape garden art.
        • After reconstruction the park and the terminal reopened on 5 September 2020, on City Day.
        • A 400-metre stream runs along the embankment, a model of the Moscow Canal with brass miniatures of the terminal and eight locks.

        🏛 Northern River Terminal
A 1937 terminal built like a ship, with a spire, long galleries and moorings on the Moscow Canal.
The main thing is to be there by sunset: from the galleries and piers the sun sets right over the water. When it gets dark the 1930s lamps come on along the galleries, recreated in the restoration. The building is open inside until 20:00.

        • Architects Alexei Rukhlyadev and Vladimir Krinsky gave the terminal the look of a steamship: the verandas are decks and the tower with its spire is the funnel.
        • The building is 75 m tall including the spire, and the facade is 150 m long.
        • The terminal was built from 1933 together with the canal, using the labour of Dmitlag prisoners.
        • The star for the spire was made in 1935 at the same time as the first Kremlin stars, but to its own design; the story that it was taken from the Spasskaya Tower is not confirmed.
        • The spire with its star was designed to be retractable: it was raised for the navigation season and lowered for winter.
        • The columns are decorated with 24 majolica medallions: Five-Year Plan construction projects, the metro, the exploration of the Arctic.
        • In 1937 Rukhlyadev received a Grand Prix diploma for the project at the Paris Exhibition.
