A pedestrian bridge over the Vodootvodny Canal with metal trees for “wedding” padlocks.

        • Officially the bridge is called Tretyakovsky, as it is part of the Tretyakov Gallery ensemble; it is also nicknamed the “Kissing Bridge”.
        • The unofficial name comes from Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, although the official version traces it to Tsaritsyn Meadow, the old name of Bolotnaya Square.
        • The bridge opened in mid-1994; Zurab Tsereteli drew the railing with medallions and the lamps from his own sketches.
        • Moscow's first “love tree” for padlocks appeared here in April 2007, and six months later there was no room left, so two more were added.
        • On one side the bridge leads to the Ilya Repin monument on Bolotnaya Square, on the other to Lavrushinsky Lane.

🏛 Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Kadashi
        2-й Кадашёвский пер., 7/4, стр. 14
A Naryshkin-baroque church of 1687–1695 with five domes, white-stone ornament and a slender bell tower.
Turn into Kadashevsky Lane for five minutes: the tall white 17th-century bell tower is easy to see above the rooftops in the evening.

        • A Church of the Resurrection is first mentioned in this area in 1493, and early documents call it the church “on the Gryazi (mud)” because of the river's floods.
        • The present church was built with money from the Kadashi merchants Kondrat Dobrynin and his son Longin; the south apse and undercroft survive from its 1656 predecessor.
        • Researchers consider the church part of a major urban axis running from Ivan the Great via Kadashi to the Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye.
        • The open second-floor gallery originally went even around the apses, which is rare in church architecture.
        • In 1812 the French used the lower church as a stable, and after its closure in 1934 it housed a KGB archive and a sports club of a sausage factory.
        • From 1966 the building was occupied by the Grabar Restoration Centre; it was handed back to the Church on 1 December 2006.
        • In 2010 an attempt to demolish the neighbouring old houses for a new development sparked protests known as the “Battle of Kadashi”.

        📖 More about the placeCollapse
        • Björn is a restaurant of new Nordic cuisine: game, fish from northern rivers, forest mushrooms and berries.
        • The signature section of the menu is smørrebrød, Danish open sandwiches, for example with spiced herring or with wild boar and wild garlic.
        • Among the starters is venison tartare with pickled cranberries and fried yagel, reindeer moss.
        • The chef is Andrei Fedoseev; the restaurant follows a zero-waste philosophy.
        • For more than eight years Björn has held "Wild Dinners" — off-site seven-course dinners cooked over fire in a forest or by a river outside Moscow.

        🚶 Raushskaya Embankment
Раушская наб., от улицы Балчуг до Большого Устьинского моста
        🆓 free entry
A quiet Zamoskvorechye embankment opposite Zaryadye: across the river are the Floating Bridge, St Basil's and the Kremlin towers, and ahead, the skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya.
After dinner go out to the river along Balchug Street and walk downstream: opposite are the lit Kremlin towers, St Basil’s and the Floating Bridge, with the Kotelnicheskaya skyscraper ahead. Fewer people here than on any other embankment in the centre.

        • The name comes from "rovushki", the ditches that drained water from the floodplain of Zamoskvorechye; they were filled in in 1835.
        • The embankment used to be called Zayaitskaya — either after the Church of St Nicholas in Zayaitskoye or after merchants "from beyond the Yaik".
        • In 1896 a power station was built here to a design by N. P. Basin; Ivan Zholtovsky later rebuilt it, and it still works today.
        • No. 2 is the Balchug hotel, before 1917 the Novo-Moskvoretskoye compound.
        • There are almost no apartment buildings on the embankment, so it is quiet in the evening even in the very centre.

        🌅 Bolshoy Ustyinsky Bridge
от Раушской наб. к Яузскому бульвару
        🆓 free entry
A 1938 arch bridge at the mouth of the Yauza: from it you see the Kotelnicheskaya skyscraper straight ahead and the Kremlin with Zaryadye upriver.
The finale on the bridge: the lit skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya right in front of you, and looking back, the whole Moskva River to the Kremlin.

        • The bridge was built in 1938: engineer V. M. Vakhurkin, architects G. P. Golts and D. M. Sobolev.
        • It is named after the mouth (ustye) of the Yauza, which flows into the Moskva right after the bridge.
        • The main span, 134 m long, is held by six riveted arches of SDS steel — it was smelted for the Palace of Soviets.
        • The bridge has no visible abutments on the banks: the load is carried by underground foundations of 31.2 × 40 m.
        • Its predecessor was an 1881 arch bridge by engineer V. N. Shpeyer, slightly downstream.

↩️ Getting back: Kitay-Gorod metro — 10 minutes along Yauzsky Boulevard and Solyanka, or Taganskaya metro — 15 minutes
