        🚶 Nikolskaya Street
A pedestrian street from Red Square to Lubyanka with the Kazan Cathedral, the Print Yard and garlands overhead.
Start at Lubyanka metro at dusk: shop windows, the Print Yard and the Kazan Cathedral at the end of the street are already lit. Garlands over the street are hung for the winter holidays — usually none in autumn.

        🚶 Ilyinka Street
An old Kitay-gorod street running from Red Square, with banks, the stock exchange and the Gostiny Dvor arcade.
From Red Square turn into Ilyinka: the exchange, the Gostiny Dvor and the 19th-century banks are lit in the evening, with almost no cars.

        • From 1935 to 1990 Ilyinka was called Kuibyshev Street.
        • The street took its name from the Ilyinsky Monastery; its Church of Elijah the Prophet (no. 3) was founded in 1519 and still stands.
        • On the night of 17 May 1606 the alarm bell from the Ilyinsky Monastery bell tower signaled the uprising in which False Dmitry I was killed.
        • The five-story Trinity Compound building (no. 5, 1870s) long remained the largest civil building in Moscow; it housed the Novotroitsky tavern, a favorite of merchants.
        • The Stock Exchange building (no. 6) stands on the site of the Church of Demetrius of Thessalonica, after which the street was called Dmitrovka in the 14th–15th centuries.
        • The Old Gostiny Dvor (no. 4) was built from 1790 to 1830 to a design by Giacomo Quarenghi.

        🚶 Varvarka Street
A short ancient street in Kitay-gorod with a string of churches, the Old English Court and the Romanov boyars' chambers on the slope down to the river.
Down Rybny Lane to Varvarka: the white churches and the Romanov chambers along the street are lit from below — the most atmospheric spot on the walk.

        • From 1933 to 1990 the street was called Razin Street; tradition says Stepan Razin was taken along it to his execution in 1671.
        • According to tradition, Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich was born in the Romanov boyars' chambers; a museum opened here in 1859, one of the first in Moscow.
        • Ivan the Terrible gave the 16th-century Old English Court to the English merchants of the Muscovy Company in 1556.
        • The street still has the churches of Maxim the Blessed and of George on Pskovskaya Hill, and the 17th-century Znamensky Monastery.
        • The south side of the street was occupied by the Rossiya Hotel until 2006; Zaryadye Park opened on its site in 2017.

Dinner right in the park, until midnight: several kitchens in one hall, so everyone can take their own. On weekend evenings better to book.
🍴 Rappoport's big restaurant in Zaryadye Park: several cuisines, waiters and almost identical prices for every dish. What to order: fish soup, beef stroganoff, tongue and mushroom julienne, and cake for dessert.

🎟 partly ticketed · the park is free; the media centre and ice cave are ticketed
A park by the Kremlin walls with landscapes of Russia's different zones, hills, underground pavilions and a concert hall.
After dinner go into the park, which is open around the clock. The Floating Bridge works at night too: from it there’s a view of the lit Kremlin, the Moskvoretsky Bridge and the Kotelnicheskaya skyscraper. The ice cave and the media centre are already closed in the evening.

        • The Floating Bridge juts out 70 m over the Moskva River and has no supports in the water.
        • Zaryadye Concert Hall opened on 8 September 2018: the main hall has about 1,500 seats, and the organ has 85 stops.
        • In 2018 Time magazine named Zaryadye one of the world's greatest places, and in 2019 the park won the jury's top prize at the MIPIM Awards in Cannes.
