        🏛 Kudrinskaya Square skyscraper
A residential Stalinist skyscraper of 1954 on Vosstaniya Square, with stepped wings and a spire.
Start at Barrikadnaya metro at dusk. The spire is lit with the dark; the best angle is from the opposite side of the Garden Ring

        • The skyscraper was built in 1948–1954, designed by Mikhail Posokhin and Ashot Mndoyants.
        • Construction was overseen by the Ministry of Aviation Industry, and many flats went to aircraft designers and test pilots, hence the nickname "House of Aviators".
        • The central part has 33 floors, 22 of them residential.
        • For Soviet housing the building was innovative: underground parking, a pram room on the ground floor, centralised dust removal.
        • At the bottom were Gastronom No. 15, covering 6,000 m² and the city's largest shop, and the 540-seat Plamya cinema.

        🏛 Gorbaty Bridge (Hunchback Bridge)
A small stone bridge over the buried Presnya River, one of the oldest in Moscow, a stone's throw from the White House.
Go down to the little stone bridge in the square behind the White House — a quiet corner with the history of the 1905 barricades

        • The bridge was built in the mid-18th century on the dam of the Middle Presnya Pond and was called the Lower Presnya Bridge.
        • In 1806, when Moscow's first public garden was laid out at the Presnya Ponds, the bridge was faced with white stone.
        • In December 1905 fierce fighting took place for the bridge: it connected Presnya with the city center.
        • Since 1918 the bridge has officially been called the "1905 Bridge"; it was restored in 1980 for the 75th anniversary of the uprising.
        • In the 1990s rallies and pickets were held on the bridge, including by miners and defrauded depositors.

🏛 House of the Government (the "White House")
A white building with a coat of arms on its tower (the clock was removed from it in 1994), built in 1972–1981 on Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment; the Russian government works here.
In the evening the building is lit. Look from the embankment: don’t linger by the fence, the site is guarded

        • The building was built in 1972–1981 to a design by Dmitry Chechulin; its authors received the Lenin Prize for it.
        • At first Chechulin proposed building the House of Soviets on Taganskaya Square.
        • The nickname "White House" stuck in August 1991, when the building became the center of resistance to the GKChP.
        • On 19 August 1991 Boris Yeltsin spoke by the building from a Taman Division tank.
        • In October 1993 tanks standing on the bridge fired 12 shells at the upper floors.
        • The architect Charles Jencks suggested marking the burned floors with black granite, but the facade was restored to its former look.
        • The Government of Russia has worked in the building since 1994.

        🌅 Novoarbatsky Bridge
A wide bridge from Novy Arbat to Kutuzovsky Prospekt: from it you can see the White House, the Ukraina hotel and the Moscow City towers over the river.
From the middle of the bridge — the Ukraina hotel lit up, and downriver the lights of Moscow City

        • The bridge was built in 1957; in Soviet times it was called Kalininsky, like Novy Arbat, formerly Kalinin Prospekt.
        • The bridge connects Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment and Taras Shevchenko Embankment, Novy Arbat and Kutuzovsky Prospekt.
        • On 4 October 1993 tanks fired on the White House from the bridge.
        • Two Stalinist skyscrapers are visible from here at once — the Ukraina hotel and the building on Kudrinskaya Square.
