        🏛 Moscow Central Post Office
        Мясницкая ул., 26А, стр. 1
A 1912 building on Myasnitskaya, Moscow's main post office; under restoration since 2020, so you can't go inside now (work was planned to finish in 2027), but you can look from outside.
The building is under restoration — look from outside, from the corner of Myasnitskaya and the boulevard

        • The building was built in 1910–1912 to a design by the engineer Leonid Novikov and the architect Oskar Munts with the participation of Leonid Vesnin.
        • The post office was ceremonially opened on 14 May 1912; the first Museum of Postal Communication began working in it at the same time.
        • The facade was to be clad in striped brick "in the Byzantine style", but brick got more expensive, so artificial stone imitating marble was used.
        • The glass dome of the main hall is often attributed to Shukhov, but that is an urban legend.
        • The post office stands on the site of an estate once owned by Alexander Menshikov.
        • In 1913 about 12% of all the country's correspondence passed through the Moscow Post Office.
        • In October 1917 there was fighting at the post office between cadets and Red Guards.

✨ Central Children's Store on Lubyanka (Detsky Mir)
🎟 partly ticketed · the store is free to enter, the rooftop viewing platform requires a ticket
The country's largest children's store, in a 1957 building with an atrium and a rooftop viewing platform.
Detsky Mir is open until 22:00; go up to the viewing deck via the 6th floor before 21:00 — from above you see the illuminated Kremlin and Lubyanka

        • The building was built in 1953–1957 to a design by Alexey Dushkin on the site of the demolished Lubyansky Passage, using its foundations and basements.
        • The department store opened on 6 June 1957 and was the first building in the USSR to install escalators.
        • Pavel Korin's mosaic panels were never made: the project was simplified during the fight against "excesses".
        • During the 2008–2015 reconstruction a seven-story atrium replaced the three-story one; eight bronze floor lamps and the marble staircases remain from the old interior.
        • The atrium clock's mechanism weighs 4.5 tonnes and has 5,000 parts, and its pendulum is 13 meters long; the clock was made by the Petrodvorets Watch Factory.
        • The carousel with horses that stood for many years in the old Detsky Mir returned to the main atrium in 2021.
        • Under the roof is the Museum of Childhood, with about a thousand exhibits, including Soviet toys.
