      Dinosaurs and evolution

      🐢 A little — under 3 km

Two of the best natural history museums: dinosaur skeletons and living nature. The metro connects them.

In the Paleontological Museum the main halls are up a flight of stairs with no lift: for a toddler a sling or carrier is more convenient. The Darwin Museum has ramps and lifts to all floors, and the cloakroom in the basement is reached by a platform lift with a staff member. Between the museums, take a bus or taxi: there are no lifts at Konkovo and Akademicheskaya on the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya line.

        • The museum was founded in 1907 by the biologist Alexander Kots, who moved his collection of stuffed animals to the Higher Women's Courses.
        • The idea came to Kots after visiting the Darwin Hall of the British Museum.
        • The animal painter Vasily Vatagin worked with Kots, and a Moscow school of animal painters formed around the museum.
        • The first building for the museum on 2nd Frunzenskaya was almost finished but was given to the Bolshoi Theatre's choreographic school.
        • The building on Vavilov Street was under construction from 1974 for more than 20 years; the first permanent exhibition opened in 1995.
        • It holds the world's largest collection of aberrants, animals and birds with unusual colouring.
        • The museum's collections number more than 400,000 items.
