All day with kids: stars, animals and Gorky Park

      ⏱ 10 h🚶 6 km + 🚇🍽 4📍 9 stops
      🚶 Moderate — 3–7 km

Planetarium and zoo in the morning, a food court at midday, then the park, minerals and a telescope in the evening.

👶 With kids🌳 Parks and nature
      👶 3–6, 7–12 years · ✓ stroller-friendly

The trip to the Fersman Museum involves stations without lifts, so a taxi or bus is better; the museum itself is reached by a grand staircase with no ramp — you'll have to carry the stroller. Syrovarnya has no kids' room. In Neskuchny Garden there are slopes down to the river — stay on the paved paths, not the stairs.

        • The 1927–1929 building was designed by the Constructivist architects Mikhail Barshch and Mikhail Sinyavsky.
        • The planetarium opened on 5 November 1929 and was then the only one in the country and the thirteenth in the world.
        • The projector for the first star hall was made by Germany's Carl Zeiss.
        • In 1994 the building was declared unsafe, and the planetarium reopened only on 12 June 2011.
        • The dome of the Great Star Hall is 25 m in diameter, and the projector shows more than 9,000 celestial bodies.
        • In the 1950s apartment blocks on Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya hid the planetarium from the street, so the dome is visible only through a narrow gap between them.
        • Inside are the interactive Lunarium museum, the Urania museum with meteorites, and the Sky Park with instruments in the open air.

        • In winter 1941 only one brown bear, Zoyka, was left on Zverinyi Island; she dug her own den.

        • The zoo's symbol since 1987 has been the Pallas's cat, the manul.

        • The Neskuchnoye estate was founded in 1728 by Prince Nikita Trubetskoy; one version says its name came from his balls and entertainments.
        • In 1756 Prokofy Demidov built a palace here with a botanical garden of more than 2,000 plant species; it is now the Alexandrinsky Palace.
        • The garden took shape in 1826–1842, when Nicholas I's palace office bought up the Trubetskoy, Orlov and Golitsyn estates.
        • Under the Orlovs the garden had an open-air "aerial" theatre for 1,500 spectators.
        • Since 1990 the quiz show What? Where? When? has been filmed in the Hunting Lodge, an 18th-century rotunda.
        • In the 1990s the garden was a gathering place for Tolkien fans, who called it Eglador.
