✨ Hare Meadow playground (Zayachya Polyana) in Kolomenskoye
        музей-заповедник «Коломенское», северная часть, у входа с Большой улицы
        🚪 entrance from Andropov Avenue
        🆓 free entry
A new 2026 playground based on a tale about hares: five play zones for kids from 1 to 14, a carrot-shaped canopy over the sandpit, rabbit-hole tunnels in the hills and musical modules.
Start from Kolomenskaya metro: 10 minutes on foot to the checkpoint on Bolshaya Street near 39 Andropov Avenue; the playground is on your left. The "Rabbit Holes" and musical modules are a warm-up before the big walk.
        📖 More about the placeCollapse
        • The playground opened in 2026, in the second stage of Kolomenskoye's redevelopment; the results of the stage were summed up on 22 September.
        • The equipment was made to a custom design, and a story about hares was invented for the playground, like a little forest fairy tale.
        • The five play zones suit different ages, from 1 to 14.
        • The rabbit-hole tunnels are hidden inside artificial half-sphere hills — great for hide-and-seek.
        • Cabbages and carrots are no accident: the market-gardening peasants of Kolomenskoye were called the "cabbage kings".

        • The 17th-century Spassky, or Rear, Gate led to the service yard of the tsar's summer residence.
        • In the 18th century the gate became the main entrance to the estate.
        • In 1814 the Streltsy guardhouses next to the gate were taken down, in 1868 the gate was thoroughly repaired, and in 2001–2003 it was restored.
        • In 1825 two avenues of lindens were planted from the Spassky Gate to the Front Gate.
        • The guardhouses at the gate, where the guards of the Sovereign's Court stood, were recreated in 2007.
        • The Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve was founded on 10 October 1923.

        • The church was built in 1532 on the orders of Vasily III, by a common version in honour of the birth of his son, the future Ivan the Terrible.
        • It is one of the first stone tent-roofed churches in Rus; it is about 62 metres tall.
        • The author was probably the Italian architect Petrok Maly.
        • In 1994 the church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
        • Inside, the church is very cramped: almost all of the volume goes upward, into the tent.
        • Nearby is Golosov Ravine, with the boulders Devy and Gus-Kamen, around which many legends circulate.

        • The ravine separates Kolomenskoye from the former village of Dyakovo, where the 16th-century Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist stands.
        • Since 2009 the ravine has been a natural monument, and the 18.9 hectares around it are a specially protected area.
        • Two huge boulders, Gus-Kamen and Devy Kamen, lie about 50 m from each other.
        • Researchers believe the veneration of the stones took shape only in the 1970s, although it is passed off as an ancient tradition.
        • A legend links the stones to St George's battle with the dragon; it spread in the 1980s–1990s.
        • In Konstantin Grigoryev's novella Green Mist, the characters pass through this ravine into the future.

        • The wooden palace of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich was built in 1667–1668; contemporaries called it the "eighth wonder of the world".
        • This description was given to the palace in verse by Simeon of Polotsk, tutor to the tsar's children.
        • The original had 270 rooms: separate quarters for the tsar, the tsaritsa and the royal children were linked by entryways and passages.
        • In 1768, by decree of Catherine II, the dilapidated palace was taken apart, after measurements and a model had been made.
        • The current palace is a reconstruction of 2010: it stands not on the historic site but on a vacant plot near Dyakovo.

        • The main facade is styled as a fairy-tale castle, and the central tower is 75 m tall.
        • Moscow Square is covered by an 8,000 m² glass dome, 25 m high, the largest in Europe.
        • The project was designed by the British studios Cunningham Architects and Chapman Taylor, with landscaping by Italy's Land Milano.

        • The peninsula appeared in 1968, when a 3.5 km canal was dug to straighten the Moskva River.
        • To drain the marshy floodplain, more than 1 million cubic metres of soil were piled up here.
        • The name comes from the village of Nagatino; by one version, from the many gats (log roads over marsh).
        • In 1977 the 60th Anniversary of October Park was laid out here, created by workers of the ZIL plant and local residents.
        • In 2008 there were plans to build Norman Foster's 450-metre skyscraper, Crystal Island, here; the project was not realised.
