Bolshaya Nikitskaya: the Conservatory and Gogol's house

      ⏱ 1 h 10 min🚶 1.4 km🍽 2📍 5 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

The old Zoological Museum building, the Conservatory with its monument to Tchaikovsky, coffee on a veranda and the estate where Gogol burned the second volume. You can finish with a Georgian lunch.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture☔️ If it rains⏱ An hour or so
      👶 3–6, 7–12 years · ✗ hard with a stroller

The halls on the 2nd floor of the MSU Zoological Museum are reached by stairs only, and strollers have not been let in; a sling is better. The pavements on Bolshaya Nikitskaya are narrow.

        • The official founding date is 1791, when the university's Natural History Cabinet was turned into a museum.
        • The core of the collection is that of Akinfy Demidov, bought in the 1740s from the Freiberg mineralogist Johann Henkel.
        • In 1804 Gotthelf Fischer became head of the museum, and in 1805 he initiated the Moscow Society of Naturalists.
        • The building, designed by Konstantin Bykovsky, was completed by 1902, one of the first in Moscow built specifically for a museum.
        • The collections number more than 10 million items, about 3 million of them insects.

        • Gogol lived here, in Count Alexander Tolstoy's manor, from 1848 until his death in 1852.
        • The first stone chambers on this plot appeared as early as the 17th century.
        • Almost none of Gogol's own belongings survive: the exhibition has, for example, Alexander Ostrovsky's sofa and Mikhail Pogodin's desk.
        • The fireplace in the drawing room is a symbol: Gogol scholar Igor Zolotussky pointed out that the manuscript burned in a stove, not in a fireplace.
        • A library has operated in the house since the 1920s, and it is now part of Gogol House.

🍽 Genatsvale na Arbate restaurant · 🧸 play area
ул. Новый Арбат, 11, стр. 2
        ▮▮▮▯▯
About 250 m from Gogol's House. The children's corner is small — more a way to keep a child busy for 15 minutes than a proper play area. There is live music in the evening, so it's better to come in the daytime with little ones.
🍴 A four-story Georgian restaurant at the start of New Arbat. There is a kids' menu and a small kids' corner (under the stairs). Try: Adjarian khachapuri and khinkali (Georgian dumplings), and something from the kids' menu for the little ones.
