Tsaritsyno in bad weather: greenhouses and a play area

      ⏱ 3 h 30 min🚶 2.4 km🍽 1📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

A short loop around Tsaritsyno for a rainy day: ducks on the Middle Pond, a warm palace, tropics in the greenhouses and lunch at a café with a play area.

👶 With kids🌳 Parks and nature☔️ If it rains
      👶 under 3, 3–6 years · ✓ stroller-friendly

Tsaritsyno and Orekhovo stations have no lifts — come by taxi or bus to the main entrance on Dolskaya Street. The paths are asphalt; from the pond to the palace is a gentle rise, so go around the stairs by the paths.

        🌳 Tsaritsyno Ponds
        🚪 entrance from Novotsaritsynskoye Highway
A cascade of large ponds around the estate with a dam, bridges and views of the palace ensemble.
Start at the Middle Pond: the ducks stay by the shore under the bridge. If the rain has stopped, let the baby sleep in the stroller on the path along the Upper Pond, where it's quietest. Take bird feed instead of bread.

        • The ponds are a cascade on the Gorodnya stream, partly existing even before the estate became the tsar's.
        • The Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve with its park and ponds was created in 1984.
        • Vasily Bazhenov built the Figured Bridge in 1776–1778, and the Large Bridge over the ravine in 1778–1784.
        • On the pond is the light-and-music singing fountain, which appeared during the 2007 reconstruction.
        • 18th-century pavilions survive in the park: Milovida and the Temple of Ceres.

        🖼 Grand Tsaritsyno Palace
🎟 ticket · the park is free, the palace requires a ticket
A pseudo-Gothic palace of red brick with white-stone decoration, built by Kazakov for Catherine II.
Not for the exhibition but to warm up: the Grand Palace has a lift, a cloakroom and toilets in the basement. Ask to leave the stroller in the cloakroom and carry the baby in a sling.

        • In 1775 Catherine II bought the Black Mud estate and renamed it Tsaritsyno.
        • The ensemble was first built by Vasily Bazhenov, but in 1785 the empress inspected the palace and ordered the main buildings demolished.
        • The new palace was built by Matvey Kazakov from 1786; after Catherine's death in 1796 construction stopped.
        • For almost two centuries the palace stood unfinished and without a roof.
        • The building was completed and restored in 2005–2007, after which a museum opened in it.
        • The style of the ensemble is called Russian, or pseudo-Gothic: red brick with white-stone decoration.

        ✨ Tsaritsyno Greenhouses
        🎟 ticket
Three restored greenhouses by the palace with palms, citrus trees and exotic plants.
Tropics all year round, warm and humid inside — take the baby's snowsuit off right at the entrance. On weekdays before lunch there's hardly anyone; a ticket is needed, and you pay by card at the ticket office.

        • The first stone greenhouse in Tsaritsyno was built by Vasily Bazhenov in the 1780s.
        • By the early 19th century the greenhouse complex had five large buildings, expanded in the 1820s.
        • Pineapples, peaches and bitter oranges were grown here and sold at Moscow markets.
        • The greenhouses were closed in 1860, when Tsaritsyno was passed to the Department of Appanages, and in the 1880s a dacha settlement grew up in their place.
        • The current three greenhouses were recreated in 2006–2007 from old drawings and excavation data.
        • The greenhouses host seasonal exhibitions, such as New Year in the Kingdom of Flora.
