        🌳 Hermitage Garden
        ул. Каретный Ряд, 3
An old garden with theatres and a summer stage, a place where Muscovites have relaxed since the late 19th century.
Start at 10 am while the garden is nearly empty: a big playground by Uspensky Lane with a sandbox and low slides, with benches in the shade of lime trees nearby. The toilet is by the Karetny Ryad entrance.

        • The garden was founded by the theatre impresario Yakov Shchukin; the “New Hermitage” summer garden opened on 30 June 1894.
        • On 26 May (7 June) 1896 Moscow's first public screening of the Lumière brothers' cinematograph was held here.
        • On 14 (26) October 1898 the Moscow Art Theatre opened at the Hermitage Theatre with the play “Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich”.

        • In 1903 the illusionist Harry Houdini performed in the garden, and over the years so did Chaliapin, Sobinov, Anna Pavlova and Sarah Bernhardt.
        • The lamp bases with the monogram “ЯЩ” (Yakov Shchukin's initials) are original: they are among the oldest lamps in Moscow.
        • The garden has busts of Victor Hugo, a gift from the Paris city hall, and of Dante, a gift from the Italian government; both were installed in 2000.

🌳 Aquarium Garden by the Mossovet Theatre
        Б. Садовая ул., 16
A cosy historic garden of the late 19th century where summer plays and concerts were once staged.
A small enclosed garden by the Mossovet Theatre: a fountain, smooth paths and a playground by Staropimenovsky Lane that is rarely crowded.

        • The garden, opened by the impresario Mikhail Lentovsky on 1 July 1893, was first called “Chicago”, after the World's Fair then under way.
        • The garden got the name “Aquarium” in 1898 under the Frenchman Charles Aumont, apparently modelled on the garden of the same name in St Petersburg.
        • Zimin's private opera began here, and Vera Komissarzhevskaya performed here in 1903.
        • In 1903 an athletics championship took place in the garden, where in the final, a nearly 25-minute bout, Ivan Poddubny beat Petrov.
        • In 1910–1912 the winter theatre building housed a skating rink, and at one time an aquarium stood in one of the pavilions.

        🌳 Patriarch's Ponds (Patriarshiye Prudy)
A square pond surrounded by old lime trees and benches, a calm park amid quiet lanes and the setting of The Master and Margarita.
Nap time: a loop around the pond — 900 metres of smooth asphalt, the baby falls asleep in a couple of laps. When they wake, the playground by Maly Patriarshy Lane has nest swings and a sandbox; feed the ducks oatmeal, not bread.

        • The stone pavilion by the water was built in 1986 on the site of a wooden one from 1938.
        • The Master and Margarita begins here; the sign banning talking to strangers refers to the novel's first chapter.
        • A skating rink has been flooded on the pond since 1900, with an area of about 12,000 m².
