      🏛 Vvedenskoye (German) Cemetery

ул. Госпитальный Вал / Наличная ул.

Lefortovo's old "non-Orthodox" cemetery on the hills of Vvedenskiye Gory: Gothic chapels, Art Nouveau gravestones, the graves of Dr Haass, Vasnetsov and Prishvin.

      • The cemetery was founded in 1771 during a plague epidemic — beyond the Kamer-Kollezhsky Rampart, by the German Quarter.
      • Protestants, Catholics and Anglicans were buried here — the people called them all "Germans".
      • From 1840 the cemetery was attached to Moscow's Lutheran churches.
      • Dr Friedrich Haass, the "holy doctor" of Moscow's prisoners, is buried here; shackles hang on the fence of his grave.
      • The cemetery has a monument to French soldiers who died in 1812.
      • The relief of the Vvedenskiye hills survives, while the little Sinichka river below was piped into a collector.
