🏛 Grotto at the Great Garden Pond

Тимирязевский парк, восточный берег Большого Садового пруда

An 18th-century stone grotto on the bank of the Razumovsky estate pond — one of the few surviving park structures of Petrovskoye-Razumovskoye.

      • The grotto was built under Count Kirill Razumovsky; the pavilion that stood above it has not survived.
      • Another grotto of the estate, where in 1869 the Nechayev group "People's Reprisal" murdered the academy student Ivanov, has not survived — this story inspired Dostoevsky's "Demons".
      • The Great Garden Pond was dug in the second half of the 18th century by damming the Zhabenka river; it covers 19 hectares.
      • Since 1939 the pond has been part of the Likhobory irrigation system, which feeds the Yauza with Volga water.
