      • The square is named after Sukharev Tower, built in 1695 to a design by Mikhail Choglokov and demolished in 1934.
      • The tower took its name from the streltsy regiment of Lavrenty Sukharev, which guarded the gate of the Earthen Town here.
      • Yakov Bruce set up Russia's first astronomical observatory on the upper floors of the tower.
      • According to legend, Bruce hid a "black book" granting power in the tower's foundation; people called the tower Ivan the Great's bride.
      • The Hospice House, now the Sklifosovsky Institute, was built in 1792–1810; its authors include Giacomo Quarenghi.
      • From 1939 to 1994 the square was called Bolshaya Kolkhoznaya.
