🏛 Stalin's Blizhnyaya Dacha (closed site)

      Староволынская ул., Матвеевский лес

A two-story house of 1934 by the architect Merzhanov, where Stalin lived and where he died in 1953. A restricted Federal Protective Service site: surrounded by forest and a fence, not visible from the street, no tours.

      • The dacha was nicknamed "Blizhnyaya" (Near) to distinguish it from Stalin's earlier dacha in Uspenskoye.
      • The house was originally one story; the second floor was added in 1943 (in 1948, according to Svetlana Alliluyeva's recollections).
      • In 1949 Mao Zedong stayed here — the only foreigner to live at the Blizhnyaya Dacha.
      • Stalin spent almost all his time in his study and slept there on a sofa, hardly ever going up to the second floor with its elevator.
      • After Stalin's death there were plans to turn the dacha into a house museum, but they were dropped after the 22nd Party Congress.
      • The dacha remains a guarded Federal Protective Service site: there are no tours, and the house is hidden behind forest and a fence.
