      🌳 Losiny Ostrov, Yauza Alley

A forest alley in the national park: mixed forest, boggy lowlands and a quiet quite unlike the city.

      • Losiny Ostrov (Elk Island) became a national park on 24 August 1983, at the same time as the Sochi one.
      • It is Moscow's largest forest tract and the largest among forests within city limits.
      • The tract has been known since 1406; in 1564 Ivan the Terrible hunted bears here.
      • The old name "Pogonny Losiny Ostrov" comes from the hound hunt (gon); a grove amid fields was called an "island".
      • The Yauza and Pekhorka rivers rise here.
      • Most of the forest was cut down during the war; replanting began in 1944.
