      Ivan the Terrible's fortress on an island where the Sviyaga meets the Volga: monasteries, a wooden church from 1551 and quiet.

      • The fortress was founded on 24 May 1551 as a base for Ivan the Terrible's campaign against Kazan.
      • It was assembled in four weeks from logs prepared near Uglich and floated down the Volga.
      • Sviyazhsk became an island in 1957, when the Kuibyshev Reservoir was filled.
      • Since 2008 a causeway with a road has led to the island.
      • Sviyazhsk station is 8.5 km west of the island, in the village of Nizhnie Vyazovye.
      • In 2017 the island had 243 residents.
