        • On 30 May 1722 Peter I celebrated his 50th birthday in Kazan; in memory of this the merchant Ivan Mikhlyaev built the cathedral.
        • The first vault, raised by local builders, collapsed at night, and the tsar sent builders from Moscow.
        • The new church was consecrated in 1726.
        • Every emperor since Catherine II except Nicholas II visited, as did Pushkin and Alexandre Dumas.
        • The young Fyodor Chaliapin sang in the cathedral choir.
        • Nearby stands Mikhlyaev's 17th-century house, the oldest civil building in Kazan.
