      🏛 Queen Louise Bridge

      Советск, у ул. Победы

The turreted portal of a 1907 bridge across the Neman; beyond the portal is the border crossing into Lithuania, so we only walk up to it.

      • Work on the 416-metre bridge began in 1904, and it opened on 18 October 1907 — for the 100th anniversary of the Peace of Tilsit.
      • From 1914 to 1944 an electric tram ran across the bridge.
      • The bridge was blown up on 22 October 1944 and rebuilt in 1947.
      • In 1964 the bas-relief of Queen Louise on the portal was replaced with the Soviet coat of arms, and the date 1907 with 1947.
      • In 1807 Alexander I and Napoleon signed a peace treaty in Tilsit.
