        • The Lower Lake is the oldest man-made structure in Kaliningrad: it was dammed in 1256.
        • The pond’s water filled the moats of the Royal Castle, and a mill worked on the dam.
        • The pond is 800 metres long and 55 to 90 metres wide.
        • A footbridge was first built across the pond in 1753.
        • On the shore are the Museum of History and Art and a monument to the submarine commander Alexander Marinesko.

        🏛 Wrangel Tower
        ул. Профессора Баранова
A round brick tower, twin of the Dohna Tower, that guarded the Upper Lake from the west.
The Wrangel Tower stands where the Lower Lake meets the cascade from the Upper Lake.

        • The tower was built in 1859 and named after Field Marshal Wrangel.
        • Together with the Dohna Tower it guarded the Upper Lake — the weakest point in the city’s defences.
        • The tower is 34 metres across and 12 high; guns stood in 42 casemates on two levels.
        • In 1913 an art gallery was set up here under the architect Friedrich Lahrs.

        • The lake is man-made: in 1270 the knights of the Teutonic Order dammed a tributary of the Pregolya.
        • It is about 900 metres long and lies 22 metres above the Pregolya.
        • On its shores are the Dohna and Wrangel towers, Yunost Park and the villa district of Maraunenhof.
        • Some of the water flows down a cascade into the Lower Lake.

🚶 Maraunenhof: the villas by the Upper Lake
        ул. Тельмана, ул. Гоголя
A quarter of 1910s mansions on the north shore of the Upper Lake — quieter and less crowded than Amalienau.
Turn into Telmana and Gogolya streets: villas with tiled roofs, and German lettering on the old manhole covers.

        • Building in the quarter began around 1910 — mostly private Art Nouveau mansions.
        • Maraunenhof grew up by the Upper Lake as a prestigious villa district; its main street is Telmana Street.
        • The streets are now named after Russian writers, but German lettering survives on old manhole covers and fire hydrants.
