        • Work on the cathedral on Kneiphof island began after 1327, and its “birthday” is taken to be 13 September 1333 — its first mention in documents.
        • It is Baltic brick Gothic — one of the few Gothic buildings in Russia.
        • Immanuel Kant was buried by the cathedral in 1804: he was the last to be laid in the professors’ vault of the Albertina University.
        • The colonnaded portico “Stoa Kantiana” over the philosopher’s grave was built by the architect Friedrich Lahrs for his 200th anniversary in 1924.
        • From 1650 the Wallenrodt Library was kept in the south tower; its interior was restored in 2005.
        • In August 1944 British bombers destroyed the centre of Königsberg; the cathedral ruins were not demolished in Soviet times — Kant is buried by its walls.
        • Restoration of the cathedral began in 1992; in 1994 the tower spire was set in place by a Baltic Fleet helicopter.
        • There are no services in the cathedral now: it holds the Kant museum, an organ hall and two chapels — a Lutheran and an Orthodox one.

🌳 Kant Island and the Sculpture Park
        остров Канта
        🆓 free entry
The former Kneiphof — an island that once held a whole medieval town; today it has the cathedral, a sculpture park and quiet embankments.
Walk round the cathedral: at its eastern end is the colonnaded portico over Kant’s grave. Then stroll the paths of the sculpture park.

        • Before the war the island was called Kneiphof: in 1327 one of the three towns that made up Königsberg received its town rights here.
        • The name Kneiphof comes from an Old Prussian word for marshy ground, a bog.
        • In 1724 Altstadt, Kneiphof and Löbenicht were merged into one city — Königsberg.
        • The sculpture park on the island opened in 1984 as a branch of the regional museum of history and art.

        🚶 Fishing Village
        Октябрьская ул., 2–12
A quarter built in imitation of pre-war half-timbering on the bank of the Pregolya: an embankment, a lighthouse and restaurants serving Baltic fish.
Cross the Honey Bridge to the Fishing Village. The best shot of the cathedral is from the embankment by the bridge.

        • The Fishing Village is not a reconstruction but a modern pastiche of the half-timbered architecture of pre-war Königsberg.
        • Work on the first phase began in May 2006 and was mostly finished by 2010.
        • The quarter stands on Oktyabrsky Island — Lomse Island before 1945; “lomse” means “marsh” in Old Prussian.
        • The embankment runs along the Pregolya from the Honey Bridge to the High Bridge.

        • The bridge opened on 1 July 2005 for the city’s 750th anniversary — hence the name.
        • It stands on the piers of the 1905 Imperial Bridge, destroyed in the war.
        • The middle span lifts to let boats through.
        • The Jubilee Bridge is narrower than its predecessor — 6 metres instead of 11 — but higher, so small boats pass without it opening.

        • The museum welcomed its first visitors aboard the Vityaz, which was moored for good at the museum pier in 1994.
        • The Vityaz was launched in 1939 in Bremerhaven as the cargo ship Mars.
        • In 30 years under the flag of the USSR Academy of Sciences the Vityaz made 65 research voyages and covered about 800,000 miles.
        • Since 2000 the diesel-electric submarine B-413 has been moored next to the Vityaz — visits inside are by timed session.
        • In 2015 a storage building with the “Glubina” exhibition opened, and a Be-12 seaplane appeared on the embankment.
        • In 2022 the museum was given the status of a museum-reserve.
