        • Until the early 20th century the Steindamm and Tragheim gates of the city fortifications stood here.
        • The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was designed by the Kaliningrad architect Oleg Kopylov in the style of the Vladimir-Suzdal churches.

        • The church was built in 1899–1901 in memory of the Prussian Queen Louise; the architect was Friedrich Heitmann.
        • After the war the building stood in ruins for a long time, and in the 1960s there were plans to demolish it.
        • The architect Yuri Vaganov converted the church into a puppet theatre, which opened here in 1976.
        • There are two floors inside: an exhibition hall downstairs and the auditorium upstairs.

        • Before the war this was Luisenwahl Park: at the end of the 18th century its owner named it after his wife Louise.
        • In 1808–1809 the park was the summer residence of the Prussian royal family; Queen Louise was especially fond of it.
        • In 1914 Wilhelm II gave the park to the city.
        • The park covers about 47 hectares, and Parkovy Stream runs through it.
        • The bandstand was restored for the city’s anniversary in 2005.

🚶 Amalienau: the villas of Kutuzova Street
        ул. Кутузова, Каштановая аллея
An early 20th-century garden suburb: Jugendstil villas, tiled roofs, front gardens and tree-lined streets with no right angles.
The finest villas are on Kutuzova Street and Kashtanovaya Alley; peek over the fences at the turrets and half-timbering, but don’t go into the gardens — people live here.

        • Amalienau was built in the early 20th century on the “garden city” concept — a blend of country and town.
        • The streets here deliberately don’t cross at right angles: each was conceived as an avenue of trees.
        • The houses were built in Jugendstil, and the rules allowed no more than two storeys plus an attic.
        • The most luxurious villas are on Kutuzova Street; each was built to its own design.
        • The district suffered little in the war; plain post-war houses stand next to the elegant villas.
