      Nevyansk: the Demidovs’ leaning tower

      An hour and a half on the Finist train to the Demidovs’ leaning tower above the factory pond, a white cathedral and a merchant’s estate. Lunch at a café right by the tower, and back in the evening.

      Suburban trains and Finists leave from the suburban platforms by the main building, next to Uralskaya metro.

        A station on the Yekaterinburg — Nizhny Tagil line; the tower is ≈2.5 km away through the town.
        From the station it’s ≈30 minutes on foot along Lenina to the pond, or 7 minutes by taxi. In slush and the first snow the pavements are slippery.

        A Demidov tower of the 1720s with a noticeable lean, a chiming clock and a “listening room” — the main symbol of Nevyansk and of the whole Ural mining country.
        Inside only on a guided tour by session: buy a ticket for the next one. The tower is being restored, but tours still run.

        • The tower was built in 1721–1725 on the orders of Akinfy Demidov; the architect is unknown.
        • It is 57.5 metres high; the top leans about 1.85 metres off the vertical.
        • The lower tier leans the most, while the upper ones lean slightly the other way — the builders were apparently correcting their mistake.
        • The tower has served as a bell tower, a watchtower, an archive, an office, a laboratory and a prison.
        • The tower appears on the coat of arms of Nevyansk and on a 2007 Bank of Russia silver coin.

        A white 19th-century cathedral next to the tower — together they make the best panorama of Nevyansk from the shore of the pond.

        • Nikita Demidov built the first wooden church at the ironworks under a charter from Peter the Great of 1702.
        • The wooden church burned down in 1826; work on the stone one had begun in 1824.
        • The main church was consecrated in 1830.
        • It is the second cathedral of the Nizhny Tagil diocese.
