        • It is one of the oldest streets in the city: it is mentioned as early as the 1740s.
        • In the 19th century it was called Uspenskaya and was the main shopping street.
        • The present name was given in 1919, after the Bolshevik L. I. Vainer.
        • The stretch between Prospekt Lenina and Kuibysheva Street is pedestrian and is called the “Ural Arbat”.
        • No. 11, the former Granit printing house in the Art Nouveau style, is now Hermitage-Ural.

        • The square took shape in 1930, when the Epiphany Cathedral was demolished and two squares — Cathedral Square and the Main Market Square — were joined.
        • In the 18th century there was trading here, so it was first called Market Square.
        • The square was paved back in the 19th century.
        • Locals simply call it “the square of the fifth year”.

        • The dam on the Iset was completed on 11 September 1723 — the city’s history is counted from it and from the state ironworks.
        • Construction began on the decision of Vasily Tatishchev and was finished under Georg Wilhelm de Hennin.
        • It was designed by Leonty Zlobin, the dam master of the Nevyansk ironworks: a log frame packed with stone and clay.
        • The Main Prospekt — now Prospekt Lenina — was laid along the axis of the dam.
        • In 1972–1973 the dam was faced with granite and decorated with bas-reliefs about the Ural metalworkers.
        • In 1998 a passage was made under the dam from the lower terrace of the square — the builders were surprised at how well the old structure had survived.

        • The square opened in 1973, for the city’s 250th anniversary, on the site of the Yekaterinburg ironworks.
        • On the left bank of the Iset is a museum zone with old factory buildings; on the right, a memorial zone.
        • The square covers about 8 hectares.
        • The water tower was built in the early 1890s: granite below and a log frame with a lantern on top.
        • The “stone garden” displays Ural minerals — the specimens were chosen by the prospector G. G. Kitaev.

        просп. Ленина, 35
A white-and-blue mansion with Gothic turrets on the bank of the pond — the most fairy-tale building in Yekaterinburg. It is now an official residence, so we look from outside.

        • The house is named after Nikolai Sevastyanov, who owned it from 1860.
        • In 1866 the façades were rebuilt to a design by Alexander Paduchev — in an eclectic style with Gothic and Baroque touches.
        • From 1874 it housed the District Court, and after the revolution the House of Trade Unions.
        • In 2008–2009 the house was restored for the SCO and BRIC summits.
        • The house appears on the 2023 series 5,000-rouble banknote.
