        • The square took shape in 1930, when the Epiphany Cathedral was demolished and two squares — Cathedral Square and the Main Market Square — were joined.
        • In the 18th century there was trading here, so it was first called Market Square.
        • The square was paved back in the 19th century.
        • Locals simply call it “the square of the fifth year”.

        • The dam on the Iset was completed on 11 September 1723 — the city’s history is counted from it and from the state ironworks.
        • Construction began on the decision of Vasily Tatishchev and was finished under Georg Wilhelm de Hennin.
        • It was designed by Leonty Zlobin, the dam master of the Nevyansk ironworks: a log frame packed with stone and clay.
        • The Main Prospekt — now Prospekt Lenina — was laid along the axis of the dam.
        • In 1972–1973 the dam was faced with granite and decorated with bas-reliefs about the Ural metalworkers.
        • In 1998 a passage was made under the dam from the lower terrace of the square — the builders were surprised at how well the old structure had survived.

        • The square opened in 1973, for the city’s 250th anniversary, on the site of the Yekaterinburg ironworks.
        • On the left bank of the Iset is a museum zone with old factory buildings; on the right, a memorial zone.
        • The square covers about 8 hectares.
        • The water tower was built in the early 1890s: granite below and a log frame with a lantern on top.
        • The “stone garden” displays Ural minerals — the specimens were chosen by the prospector G. G. Kitaev.

        • The garden was laid out in 1826 and is named after the estate’s owner, Pyotr Kharitonov.
        • The pond has two artificial islands; the rotunda on the central one was built in 1935–1937.
        • Of the original garden buildings only the grotto survives — wine was kept and ice cream made in it.
        • Prokudin-Gorsky photographed the old rotunda on the hillock in colour in 1910.
